CNN —A suspect has been indicted in relation to the deaths of two Australian brothers and an American, who died during a surfing trip in Mexico, according to Baja California’s Prosecutor’s Office. The suspect was indicted on a charge of forced disappearance in the case involving the three tourists, whose bodies were found last week dumped in a 50-foot well with gunshot wounds to the head. While Baja California has been plagued by drug cartel violence in recent years, it rarely occurs in tourist areas like Ensenada. Dozens of people held a protest last week in Ensenada calling on authorities to do more to tackle violence facing tourists and locals alike. While parts of Mexico are established tourist destinations, violent crime including kidnapping and human trafficking plague parts of the country, particularly in border areas.

CNN —Three bodies found dumped in a well with gunshot wounds to the head have been confirmed as missing tourists, including a US citizen, Mexican authorities said Sunday. Relatives of American Jack Carter Rhoad and Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson identified their bodies without having to perform genetic tests, the Baja California Attorney General’s office said in a statement on Sunday. The vehicle was confirmed to be the same one Callum Robinson posted an image of on Instagram a week before the trio went missing. Mexico City CNN —At least 10 Cuban migrants died and 17 others were injured when the truck they were traveling in overturned in southern Mexico on Sunday, Mexican authorities say. The truck was “irregularly” transporting 27 Cuban nationals on the Pijijiapan-Tonalá highway in the southern state of Chiapas when the accident occurred, Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) said in a statement. Officials said initial reports suggested the driver had been speeding and lost control of the unit, fleeing the scene after it overturned. Migrants from Central America and the Caribbean sometimes travel through Mexico in trucks and trailers in the hope of reaching the United States. In 2021, 55 people were killed and more than 100 injured when a truck also believed to be carrying migrants overturned in Chiapas state, which borders Guatemala.

This static game of cat and mouse will play out several times past several checkpoints on the route. The migrants CNN spoke with said this was just another bump in their long road, another set of obstacles that will likely make what is generally a one-hour drive last the whole day.

CNN —At least 16 people have been killed and 36 more injured following a bus crash Tuesday on central Mexico’s Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway, according to officials. The bus, which was carrying locals and migrants, collided with a trailer truck on the highway near the border between the states of Oaxaca and Puebla, Oaxaca’s Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. The injured were transferred to hospitals in Puebla for medical attention. CNN —The number of migrants crossing the treacherous Darien Gap, a mountainous rainforest region that connects South and Central America, has broken a new record, according to immigration officials in Panama. Last August, a Mexican truth commission report concluded that the students, who disappeared en route to a demonstration in Mexico City, had been victims of “state-sponsored crime.”The students, from a teachers’ college in Ayotzinapa, were intercepted by local police and federal military forces while traveling through the southwestern city of Iguala in September 2014. Survivors from the original group of 100 students said police officers and soldiers suddenly opened fire. But dozens of students on the buses disappeared that night, and their fate remains unknown. CNN —Authorities in Mexico are searching for a man who they say intentionally set a bar on fire after being kicked out, killing 11 people overnight near the Arizona border in the Mexican state of Sonora. The fire broke out at 1:33 a.m. Saturday at a bar in San Luis Rio Colorado, near the United States border city of San Luis, Arizona, according to a statement from the Sonora Attorney General’s Office. The person suspected of starting the fire, who authorities said had “a high degree of intoxication,” threw an object with fire at the drinking establishment’s doors after security staff removed him from the building, according to the statement translated from Spanish. “According to versions (from) several witnesses, the person with a young, male appearance was disrespecting women in that bar and was expelled,” according to the statement. The prosecutor’s office described the object thrown at the bar as “a kind of ‘Molotov’ cocktail, which caused the incident.”The 11 people killed include seven men and four women, and four people with injuries were being treated in hospitals in San Luis Río Colorado and the US, according to the statement.
